Expressive Oil Painting Retreat

May 23-30, 2026 • Fern Hall Estate • Pennsylvania, USA

Join me this spring for an immersive Expressive Painting Retreat — a week designed to refresh your creativity and strengthen your confidence in a loose, expressive painting style.

If you’re craving a real creative experience — something you can see, feel, smell, taste, and hear — this retreat was designed for you.

Imagine walking toward the stone studio in the morning sunshine . . . newborn lambs bleating in the nearby meadow, flowers just beginning to bloom. You chuckle as you point out the streak of cerulean blue across my cheek while we sit down with our coffee, brushes in hand, the familiar scent of linseed oil filling the studio, and the happy chatter of artists settling in to paint together.

For eight days and seven nights, a small group of just 11 artists will gather at Fern Hall Estate in Northeastern Pennsylvania — a historic countryside property nestled between Crystal Lake and the Endless Mountains. Surrounded by open pastures, rolling hills, and the quiet rhythm of a working sheep farm, it’s the kind of place that naturally invites you to slow down and create.

Together we’ll move through the full creative process — from expressive sketchbook practice to finished oil paintings. You’ll watch demonstrations up close, paint alongside me, receive thoughtful guidance, and experience the clarity that comes from painting with intention rather than hesitation.
And somewhere along the way, things begin to shift.

You paint more freely. Your brushstrokes feel purposeful. Your color mixing becomes more confident.

This retreat isn’t just about completing paintings. It’s about stepping into a creative environment where your expressive voice can grow and flourish alongside a small, encouraging community of artists.

Grow and flourish in a small, encouraging community of artists.

You
belong here.

Many artists hesitate to step into a painting retreat because they worry they’re not as talented as everyone else.

But artists join this retreat from all different places — professional painters, emerging artists, and many who are joyfully returning to painting after years spent raising families or helping everyone else.

You’re welcome exactly where you are — truly.

Throughout the week, I’ll be guiding you step-by-step through my expressive painting process. We’ll all be exploring the approach together in a relaxed, encouraging studio where questions are welcome, progress is celebrated, and the joy of painting takes center stage again.

Because this retreat is designed to be deeply personal and hands-on, we intentionally keep the group small.

Just 11 artists will gather at Fern Hall for the week.

Our days unfold naturally — mornings with coffee and sketchbooks as the studio fills with the quiet focus of artists settling in to paint.

Throughout the day you’ll watch demonstrations, work on your own paintings, and receive thoughtful guidance as we explore the expressive process together.

In the evenings, we gather around the table to enjoy beautiful meals prepared by our private chef — sharing stories, laughter, and the kind of conversations that only happen when artists spend a week creating side by side.

By the end of the week, something deeper begins to take hold — a clearer process, renewed confidence, and a creative momentum that follows you home.

Because of the intimate size of the group, the retreat typically fills quickly.

Everything you need for a week of focused creativity.

Retreat Details

The Expressive Oil Painting Retreat is an immersive 8-day, 7-night experience designed to help artists break through hesitation in their painting process and develop the confidence to create expressive, intentional work. Across six focused studio days, you’ll work through Jen’s complete approach—from expressive sketchbook practice to finished oil paintings of both a horse and a dog. Daily demonstrations, individual guidance and critique, and dedicated studio time in an intentionally small group setting will help you strengthen your mark making, clarify your value structure, and develop the confidence to approach your paintings with greater intention and freedom. Surrounded by the peaceful setting of Fern Hall Estate, this retreat blends focused artistic growth with creative renewal, connection, and inspiration.

Day 1: Arrival

Artists are welcome to arrive beginning at 4:00 PM on May 23. After checking in and settling into your room, join Jen on the patio for light refreshments and cocktails as everyone gathers and gets acquainted.
At 6:00 PM, we’ll come together for our first dinner, thoughtfully prepared by our talented private chef.

Each day at the Expressive Oil Painting Retreat follows a natural rhythm designed to balance focused studio time, personal guidance, and free-time to recharge.

Mornings begin with a nourishing breakfast and coffee. Next join Jen for an inspiring habit-building time in your sketchbook—a vital part of the expressive creative process. From there, the studio comes alive as Jen demonstrates key elements of her expressive painting process—breaking down how she approaches gesture, underpainting, value structure, and the early stages of building a compelling composition. You’ll watch demonstrations up close before diving into your own work, where Jen circulates through the studio offering thoughtful one-on-one guidance.

After lunch together at the estate, the afternoon sessions continue with deeper exploration of your painting. You’ll refine your value story, strengthen your focal points, and develop the expressive marks that bring your subject to life. Throughout the week, you’ll also incorporate sketchbook practice—an important part of Jen’s creative process that helps artists loosen up, see more clearly, and develop confidence in their mark making. As the day winds down, there’s time to step away from the easel—whether that means a walk by the lake, time in the sauna, or simply relaxing in the lounge spaces around the estate.

Evenings bring everyone back together for a shared dinner prepared by the retreat chef, followed by conversation, connection, and a limited cash bar offering hand-crafted cocktails. It’s a time to unwind, reflect on the day’s progress, and enjoy the company of fellow artists in a relaxed, welcoming setting.

Departure in the morning after breakfast.

Fern Hall Estate

Fern Hall, named for the lush greenery found on the 100+ acres, was crafted from local stone in 1916. Located in the town of Clifford, it sits between Crystal Lake the majestic Endless Mountains. The upper stone patios have stunning views of the mountains, farm and lake. You'll have complete privacy, natural spaces and a view of the organic sheep farm. The wooden boathouse has soaring ceilings, wooden patio and 75 feet of private lakefront.

Welcome to the former family homestead of the Johnson family. The Johnson family dining room is accented with the original leaded glass doors by Dorflinger Glass Works. Many of the bathroom features are original as are the windows. Bathrooms have recently been updated with new fixtures and Toto commodes. The kitchen still retains the original built-in wooden ice boxes which used to be stocked by ice cut from Crystal Lake. The kitchen updates include farm house sink, Aga stove, new appliances and gathering island. The bronze wall sconces and chandeliers by Tiffany, one of the first electric lifts in the area, the marble and ivory floors and the chestnut woodwork are all original.

Guests have the entire estate to themselves. You'll have access to 10 acres of yard space with weeping beach, four outdoor covered patio areas and a private boathouse for your swimming and lake recreation.

Throughout the retreat, guests will enjoy an exceptional personalized gourmet dining experience prepared by a professionally trained private chef. Each meal will showcase thoughtfully sourced seasonal ingredients, artfully prepared and beautifully presented. The menus draw inspiration from modern American cuisine with subtle influences from global flavors, resulting in dishes that feel both elevated and deeply satisfying.
